In Vaulted ceilings in the home, I find I become more conscious of the appearance I want to maintain with vertical rhythm-instead of seeming empty, it should also have an intentional effect.
When I am specifying the furniture, I am choosing a low back sectional to keep views, a large performance fabric rug to fill the lounge area and counter height stools which echoes back the dining chairs for a continuity. The Kitchen island is utilized to double by way of a social anchor with pendants lining up with a line for gentle zoning with a slim console that is often positioned at the back of the sofa for non-technological factors including charging and storage. A discreet living room renovation fireplace on the far wall holds the arrangement of seating but is not a focal point that takes attention from the island.
In my experience, open plans can only work if they have a disciplined respect to the material language. The use of the same timber tone on floors, shelves and on the island panel quietly brings unity to zones, while the tonal paint scheme maintains the balance between reflection and daylight. I’ve found that a soft art selection (Minimalist in approach) avoids the look and feel of visual clutter and towards laxity of flow.
To take this idea even a step further I’d add acoustic drapery on an extra-wide track and a secret pocket door (one close to the Kitchen) for the possibility to separate from time to time during heavy cooking duties. A built-in bench at the edge of the dining can also give additional flexible seating, without crowding up the plan.
